Utility Locating Service

A vital service the St. Johns County Utility Department provides is locating underground utility lines.

Anyone who plans to dig in a suspected area within a utility corridor is required to call 811 a few business days before digging. This allows our Utility to identify the approximate location of underground utilities so that they can be marked with paint or flags to avoid unintentional damage to underground utility infrastructure. 

The following colors are used to mark lines:

• blue – water
• green – sewer
• purple – reuse
• red – power
• orange – communications
• yellow – gas

Currently, 2,500 to 3,000 locate services are completed each month to help protect infrastructure under the ground.
