St. Johns County Launches Inaugural SJC 101 Citizens Academy

St. Johns County proudly announces the successful launch of the inaugural SJC 101 Citizens Academy, which began on March 6. Building on the success of last year’s pilot program, this comprehensive 12-week academy provides residents and business owners with an in-depth understanding of County government operations.

Due to overwhelming interest, the Spring 2025 class quickly reached full capacity, and a waitlist is now open for the Fall 2025 session. St. Johns County residents and business owners interested in future sessions are encouraged to apply online at www.sjcfl.us/sjc101 to secure a spot on the waitlist for the next available program.

A Strong Start with County Leadership

The first session, themed “County Governance,” set a new standard for transparency by featuring representatives from all six constitutional offices of St. Johns County. Participants gained valuable insights into the County’s daily operations from key officials.

Board of County Commissioners Chair Krista Joseph opened the program with a welcome message to the participants.

“Learn about the departments, learn about the people and what we do,” Chair Joseph said. “We’re doing it for you.”

The following officials provided introductions to their offices before meeting with students in small group rotations:

  • Brandon Patty, St. Johns County Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller
  • Eddie Creamer, St. Johns County Property Appraiser
  • Commander George Harrigan, representing Sheriff Robert Hardwick, St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office
  • Vicky Oakes, St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections
  • Jennifer Ravan, St. Johns County Tax Collector

Fostering Civic Engagement

SJC 101 is designed to educate, engage, and empower participants by providing direct access to County leaders and departments. Graduates are encouraged to take an active role in their community, including serving on County advisory boards and committees.

“SJC 101 is a remarkable opportunity for residents to gain a behind-the-scenes look at County government,” County Administrator Joy Andrews said. “By fostering transparency and encouraging civic participation, we are empowering our community to be active stakeholders in shaping the future of St. Johns County.”

Comprehensive Curriculum

Each week, SJC 101 participants explore a different facet of County operations through interactive sessions focused on the themes of County Governance, Growth, Support Services, Public Relations, Public Safety, Quality of Life, Recreation, Public Health & Human Services, Community, Utilities, Public Works, and Administration.

The program will conclude with a graduation ceremony at the June 3 Board of County Commissioners meeting.
