On January 15, 2025, St. Johns County Board of County Commissioner Ann Taylor, District 5, and Clay Murphy, District 3, Vice-Chair participated in a press conference hosted by the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce to announce that the Castillo de San Marcos had received a Certified Autism Center™ designation, making it the first National Park Service area in the nation to achieve this status. The County’s Office of Public Affairs produced a video recap of the ceremony.
At the press conference, Taylor said in part, “It has been said that ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it.’ Well, that is what we are doing here in St. Johns County with this autism initiative. The St. Johns County brand is Florida at First Sight. That is who we are and what we are doing. We want people to have sight of our community demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and diversity in the journey to make St. Johns County a Certified Autism Destination.
Isabelle Renault, president and CEO of the St. Johns County Chamber, was joined by Myron Pincomb, CEO and board chairman of the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, to present the CAC certificate to Gordon Wilson, park superintendent, for the Castillo and Fort Matanzas.
