St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) Chair Krista Joseph, District 4, visited the Northrop Grumman high school internship program in January. The Office of Public Affairs produced a video sharing her experience.
The program is led by Orville (Orv) Dothage III, Sector Manager, Aeronautics Quality Standardization at the St. Augustine site. During Commissioner Jospeh’s tour, he said, “This provides a pathway to college for these high school students.” He shared that the program is in its third year, and 18 students have completed it, with about 50% being hired and are able then to use tuition reimbursement to go to college if they choose.
Northrop Grumman facilitates the internship program through the St. Johns County School District’s Career & Technical Education academies. They have also had a relationship with First Coast Technical College for about 15 years, providing materials and support for the college’s aircraft fabrication program.
One of the interns who visited with Commissioner Joseph said, “This is great. We learn, get paid for it, and get a jump start on my career. My grandpa was a plane pilot; now I get to build them.”
The Northop Grumman St. Augustine location employs about 1,000 workers, of whom an estimated 30% are military veterans. It is the largest private employer in St. Johns County.
