Internship Program

The District 23 Medical Examiner’s Office (MEO) supports the education of students interested in forensic pathology, medicolegal death investigation, medicine, and forensics by providing relevant learning opportunities, and work experience, as well as serving as mentors and role models. The District 23 MEO provides interns with the opportunity to observe in autopsy examinations, shadow forensic investigators at death scene investigations, and assist in the various other duties this office is responsible for, giving the student a wide range of experience in the job duties employed by this office.

The District 23 MEO offers internships to undergraduates during the summer semesters and will only accept internship applications from students with a focus on forensic pathology, toxicology, anthropology, and/or medicolegal death investigation. Internship opportunities are restricted to students in the following areas of study:

  • Biology
  • Pre-med
  • Death Investigation
  • Forensic Science
  • Medicine
  • Toxicology
General Requirements of Internship
  • Must be enrolled in a college or university at time of internship/volunteer.
  • Must be earning college credit for participation in internship.
  • Must be covered by college or university’s liability insurance and provide documentation of coverage upon award of internship. (NOTE: If your school has a working relationship with this office, it is possible that they already have documentation on file.)
  •  Must be enrolled in a relevant major such as Biological Sciences, Medical Science, Nursing, Forensic Anthropology.
  • Although hours are flexible in accordance with your program’s requirements, a work schedule must be followed during the internship. This office needs to know when you will or will not be present in order to schedule various work-related projects, other interns, etc.
  • A background check will be performed by St. Johns County Administration prior to acceptance.
  • The Medical Examiner’s Office will work with the applicant to fulfill their educational institution’s requirements for Internship hours.
Application Process

PLEASE NOTE: Due to an extraordinarily high demand for this internship program, please consider sending in your applications as early as possible (i.e. a semester or two prior to your desired start date). Applicants will be considered on a first come, first serve basis, as there are limited spots available each semester.

Internship Process

Download the St. Johns County Volunteer Application, as well as the Intern Acknowledgment, and the Background Transmittal forms. Email these forms, as well as a letter of introduction and possibly a resume to Kelly Boulos (kboulos@sjcfl.us), MEO Internship coordinator; and let her know of your intentions.
