St. Johns County Proclaims July 2024 as Parks and Recreation Month

At the regular St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, June 18, District 1 Commissioner Christian Whitehurst issued a proclamation recognizing July 2024 as Parks and Recreation Month. Representatives from St. Johns County’s Parks and Recreation Department attended the meeting to receive the proclamation.

St. Johns County has an impressive Parks and Recreation system, managing 2,586 acres of parks, conservation land, and coastline. This includes 95 parks, 13 boat ramps, 1 golf course, 3,780 acres of protected land, and 42 miles of coastline.

The department offers a variety of opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors and live healthy lives. Parks provide spaces for popular sports, while hiking trails, swimming pools, and more encourage exploration and connection with nature, proven to benefit mental well-being.

“Some of my fondest memories are from playing ball or exploring trails with friends in our parks,” Whitehurst said. “The Parks and Recreation Department plays a vital role in our quality of life.”

Parks and Recreation programming goes beyond just providing green spaces; the department offers educational activities and programs, including after-school programs, youth sports, veteran initiatives, special events, and environmental education.

“We have exciting programs planned to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month,” Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Jamie Baccari said. “These include Passport to Parks, geocaching adventures, the opening of the Cornerstone Park playground, a selfie contest with prizes, and more!”
