St. Johns County Proclaims March 4 – 8 as Flood Awareness Week

At the March 5, 2024, St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners Regular Meeting, Commissioner Krista Joseph, District 4, proclaimed Mar. 4 – 8 as Flood Awareness Week.

The proclamation comes in light of the County’s history of severe weather events, including extreme rainfall and tropical systems, leading to flooding in coastal and riverine areas, causing substantial damage and flood losses to homes and buildings across all risk zones.

St. Johns County actively participates in the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System, enabling residents to safeguard themselves against flood-related losses by purchasing flood insurance at reduced premium rates. Additionally, the county has established higher regulatory standards to minimize flood risk and potential damage to properties.

The effectiveness of flood preparedness, control, and mitigation measures is pivotal in reducing the loss of life and property damage during floods. Recognizing this, St. Johns County emphasizes the importance of public education and awareness regarding potential weather hazards and protective measures.
