What is GIS?
GIS is an acronym for Geographic Information Systems. A Geographic Information System is defined as "an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information.”
What types of maps are available?
You can view a collection of our most requested maps by visiting our Map Mart. The maps are in Portable Document Format (PDF) for you to download and print at home or in your office.
How do I go about ordering a copy of a map?
If you cannot find a particular map in the Map Mart or need a hardcopy map in a different size, please contact us for further assistance.
Are copies of the St. Johns County Road Atlas available?
Yes, the 2008-2009 Edition of the St. Johns County Road Atlas is now available.
The new 130+ page color Road Atlas contains roads, proposed roads, trails, railroads, city limits, golf courses, parks, water bodies, and points of interest such as fire stations, public and private schools, boat ramps, libraries, post offices, cemeteries, campgrounds, marinas, traffic signals, and government buildings. Included in the Road Atlas is an index for all of the road names and points of interest as well as specialty maps for County Commissioner and School Board Districts, Park Facilities, Zip Code Boundaries, School Locations, Hurricane Evacuation Routes, and a Hurricane Tracking Chart.

Are digital data available for the public?
Yes, GIS data is now available to the public free of charge from the GIS Data Depot page. The GIS Data Depot is a collection of data layers from our GIS Data Library, which are downloadable in shapefile or file geodatabase format. If you are unable to download the GIS data files, a DVD of the GIS Data Library in shapefile format is available for $5.00 a copy. This DVD DOES NOT include any parcel data. Please contact the St. Johns County Property Appraiser’s Office for information regarding the parcel layer. We also offer black/white aerial imagery of the County which was flown in 1999, 2002, and 2003. Color aerial imagery of the County is available for the years 2005 and 2008. Color infrared aerial imagery is also available of the County which was flown in 2002, 2005, and 2008. All of the aerial imagery is in Lizardtech's MrSID compressed file format and is provided to the public at a cost of $5.00 per DVD. ArcExplorer is a free viewer that can read both shapefile and MrSid file formats. Please contact us for further assistance if you wish to order CD-ROMs or DVDs containing any of the County's GIS data.

A good place to start is to visit www.gis.com. GIS.com is a portal to GIS information on the Web and was created by ESRI, a GIS software developer. The site is intended to educate anyone interested in geographic technology on the value that technology brings to his or her day-to-day activities.
